SO, what is the Drop Trailer Program and is it right for you?
The Drop Trailer Program is when the driver of a carrier leaves a trailer to be loaded by the shippers or unloaded by distributers without the driver having to wait for the loading or unloading which can take up quite a lot of time.
This allows shippers to load at their own pace. Dock congestion and detention fees can be avoided through the program. The routes are also more sufficient and consistent. Having said that, though it does promise a smoother more efficient supply chain it also requires very good organization. You will have to have constantly be in touch with carriers to ensure the smooth running of the operation, which may be strenuous.
Additionally, though you may be saving on costs and time with the driver not having to wait, you may be losing time if you are on a very tight shipment schedule since the trailer can stay at the facility for days at a time.
It is also a valid option as it allows you to re-pack at your facility, but bare in mind it does not cater to perishable goods. These goods cannot afford to be docked and therefore such cargo does not apply to this solution.
